(More customer reviews)I went all-in with my International Playthings Rocket purchase, so that meant buying the Space Base too. Or Space Base 2, as its called.
The Space Base, like the moon buggy that pulls it, has rubber wheels that ensure it rolls smoothly. Unfortunately, the little hook that connects the buggy to the Base is not very sturdy, so a strong enough push ends up easily disconnecting the two vehicles. My son doesn't roll the Base around much as a result.
The Space Buggy has a shovel connected to it that clicks upward or downward. This makes it slightly top heavy so that it falls over easily. Putting an astronaut or the robot in it helps balance it out.
The Space Base itself opens across the top, with the lower flap acting as steps and the upper flap as a solar panel. It sounds ingenious, until you see the mechanism to open/close the Base in action. It's flimsy and very difficult for little hands to open and close. I have to do it for my son, who gets annoyed when he can't close it himself.
Inside the base is a laptop and a screen with an astronaut (presumably from Rocket 1) talking. My son finds this to be the most interesting part of the Base.
The astronauts are green and blue, and there's a robot helper thrown in for good measure. The robot is the same size as the astronauts, so you know what that means - he'll be driving the space buggy while the astronauts kick back in the base for a nap.
Unlike the Rocket, the Space Base has limited functionality - you roll it around and you open/close it - and it does both poorly. With no special effects noises or lights, no cool alien, and a flimsy door, this toy is better suited for older kids (three years at least) who can operate it.
