(More customer reviews)I'm a big Silver Age DC fan, and I love the bizarre and whimsical characters from that era. One of my favorite titles was Metal Men, and when Mattel started to produce figures from that team, I was estatic!
The first of the Metal Men to be produced was Iron. The figure looked as if it'd just stepped out of a 1960s Andru/Esposito comic, and its accessories (snap on wrench and a wrecking ball designed to suggest they were forming out of Iron's own body) were logical. Next came Gold. Again, great looking figure, but this time the accessories (a pick axe and a chain saw) were kind of useless, since gold is such a soft metal.
And now, there's Mercury.
The figure, on its own, looks terrific. As Iron and Gold looked properly heroic and noble, Mercury has the look of the sardonic wisecracker down pat. Mattel sculpted a new body type for the figure, so it's as lean and lanky as in the comics.
Unfortunately, Mercury is exactly as tall as his fellow Metal Men.
He should be at least half a head taller than the rest of the gang. And his accessory? A snap-on pair of shears.
Now mercury is the only metal that's liquid at room temperature (a fact that the character constantly reminded us of in the comics. Any type of tool is going have limited effect on a target. Try cutting cloth with a glass of water, and you'll see what I mean.
Still, a full set of the team is definitely worth having. We still need Lead, Platinum, Tin and Dr. Will Magnus, creator of the crime-fighting robots. (Tin could be Doc Magnus' accessory, ensuring that the short, slight and humble metal would be in scale.)
After that, we really need complete sets of The Doom Patrol (already started), Challengers of the Unknown, Blackhawks and the Inferior Five. (Hey, hopefully someone from Mattel is reading this!)
